Internship Program

On an ongoing basis, KQV (AM) provides management level instruction and oversight to an intern from a Pittsburgh and other area college or university, including University of Pittsburgh, Penn State University, Point Park University, Washington & Jefferson College, Duquesne University, Robert Morris University, Ohio University, and Notre Dame University, West Virginia University, and Clarion University. During this reporting period, there was no student intern, but the program remains in place and the licensee actively recruits for applicants.

Internship Program - 3 interns

In August 2013, in cooperation with the Pittsburgh Black Media Federation, KQV conducted an intensive, week-long journalism training program for students from Pittsburgh and other high schools. Each day from August 3 through 10, from 6-10 PM, three students were provided with in-depth training by experienced KQV staff. A news reporter and a news editor worked with the interns for 4 hours each night. Each intern was given access to the KQV studio. They conducted interviews in the newsroom and/or in the field, then edited the audio into a 15-minute story. The three stories aired later in the month on KQV’s weekly news magazine, Pittsburgh Profiles.Three interns participated from three separate schools:

- 17-year old senior at The Pittsburgh University Preparatory School, in Pittsburgh, PA.

- 18-year old recent graduate from East Allegheny High School in Swissvale, PA.

- 16-year old Junior from Ocoee High School in Orlando, FL.

On March 17, 2014 the General Manager of KQV and an Account Executive met with faculty members Dave Fabilli - Professor of Broadcasting-The School of Communications, and Dr. Steve Hallock – Director-School of Communications, to discuss the KQV internship program and means to enhance recruitment of Point Park students for the program.
