President Obama will ask Congress for more than 1.8 billion in emergency funding to combat the Zika virus. The virus is transmitted by mosquitoes, and has been linked to a surge of children born with abnormally small heads and brains in Latin America. The World Health Organization has declared the growing outbreak a global medical emergency. The continental U.S. has yet to see any cases of transmission by mosquitoes, but Puerto Rico and other U.S. territories that are typically warmer are on alert for a possible outbreak.
