President Trump's first proposed budget calls for $3.6 trillion cuts in government spending over the next decade in hope for a balanced budget, taking aim at social programs like healthcare, food stamps and housing for the poor while boosting the military, border defense and law enforcement. Critics say the Trump proposal would plunge the country back into recession and rip the social safety net away from people who need it most. The administration counters that the plan puts "taxpayers first" who shouldn't have to subsidize able-bodied people not contributing to the workforce.
