BNY Mellon Grand Classics: Pictures at an Exhibition
Currently artistic director and chief conductor of the China Philharmonic Orchestra, music director of the Shanghai Symphony and artistic director of the Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra, distinguished Chinese conductor Long Yu makes his Pittsburgh Symphony debut with Pictures at an Exhibition. Mussorgsky’s showpiece for piano, later orchestrated by Ravel, vividly depicts 10 paintings by Mussorgsky’s friend Viktor Hartmann. Principal viola Randolph Kelly takes center stage for Paganini’s virtuosic Sonata per la Grand Viola, which was given its Pittsburgh premiere by Kelly.
The U.S. Supreme Court agreed Monday to let President Trump's immigration travel ban go into effect for some travelers, reversing the actions of lower federal courts that had put the controversial policy on hold, ruling it a form of religious discrimination against Muslims. The Court also announced it would hear the case in early fall, leaving open the possibility it could reverse this verdict if challengers can prove the ban is illegal or unconstitutional.
