Last Friday president-elect Donald Trump spoke to Taiwanese President, breaking decades of U.S. protocol, opening the door to potential trouble with China, which refuses to recognize the island as a separate nation. The phone call received was described as congratulatory, and is believed to be the first conversation between an American president and a Taiwanese leader since 1979, when U.S. diplomatic relations were terminated, no longer seen as an independent sovereignty. However Washington has sold $12 billion worth of arms and has an agreement to help defend Taiwan.
