Senate Bill 76 to abolish the school property tax in Pennsylvania has made it out of the Senate Finance Committee this week. Known as the Property Tax Independence Act it was first introduced in January 2013. The bill would replace the school property tax with an increase of the state sales tax from 6 percent to 7 percent, an increase in the personal income tax from 3.07 percent to 4.34 percent and more sales-taxable items. Those funds would go to public schools instead of the school property tax.
